The Infant of Prague Mission, Bridgeport, California

Bridgeport is the county seat of Mono County and as such was very important and influential in the governance of Mono County. It was natural to have a church in this important town. The original church was first built probably in the very early 50's. It was located at the junction of Highway 395 and Highway 89 going into Yerrington, Nevada and beyond. Where the original church came from is somewhat of a mystery. It was an old shed-like structure that could seat only about 60 persons, and that was with a bit of squeezing! An old gas space heater was the only source of heat. There was absolutely no insulation and during the winter, that church was coooold! There was one day when Fr. Savage came to say Mass and somehow the main aisle was wet from a leaky pipe and was a sheer sheet of ice. His hands actually stuck to the chalice, it was so cold. Bridgeport is often the coldest place in the nation, something the weathermen on TV always miss.

During his first three years, Fr. Savage personally added a new roof and fixed up the interior as much as he could to make it as prayerful a place as possible. During the summer there were as many people sitting outside the church as inside, with cars coming and going along the busy highway. The need for a new church was obvious and the local parishioners formed the Catholic Club and began to raise money. Through hard work they eventually succeeded and in 1992 their dream was realized and the new church was dedicated by Bishop Montrose. During the peak summer months, there is an overflow crowd but during the winter months, the church is about a third filled.

Fr. James Rothe, a priest of the Los Angeles diocese, has retired to his home in Twin Lakes and has been active in helping with Masses every weekend. For the first time there is a Saturday evening Mass now available during Daylight Savings time. During the winter, due to weather and very small numbers attending Church, the Saturday evening Mass is cancelled.
