Our Lady of the Valley Mission, Walker-Coleville, California

The towns of Walker and Coleville are in Little Antelope Valley in the northern part of Mono County, with an estimated total population somewhere between a thousand and fifteen hundred people. In the early 90's, a family there requested that if it were possible, could their area be included in the Sunday schedule of Masses. After obtaining permission from Bishop Montrose, a 2 PM Mass was started each Sunday, first in the small Methodist church in Coleville, and then within a year in the community center in Walker. For the first number of years, there were upwards to twenty-five or so people attending Mass, but when the Marine Base at Sonora Junction was given a Catholic Chaplain, he started a Sunday Mass at 9 AM at the Marine Base Housing in Coleville. That was certainly a better time for a Sunday Mass than 2 PM. Three years later, he was replaced by another Catholic Chaplain and shortly thereafter, the afternoon Mass was cancelled.

At present, there is no Catholic Chaplain, but Fr. James Rothe from Bridgeport has now taken over some of the duties of a Catholic Chaplain, principally that of saying Mass every Sunday Morning. Unfortunately, it is not at the base housing, but at the actual Marine Base at Sonora Junction. The base has a beautiful new chapel with fantastic views of the spectacular surrounding mountains, and it is only about a 20-minute drive from Walker.
