The towns of Walker and Coleville are in
Little Antelope Valley in the northern part of Mono County,
with an estimated total population somewhere between a thousand
and fifteen hundred people. In the early 90's, a family there
requested that if it were possible, could their area be included
in the Sunday schedule of Masses. After obtaining permission
from Bishop Montrose, a 2 PM Mass was started each Sunday,
first in the small Methodist church in Coleville, and then
within a year in the community center in Walker. For the first
number of years, there were upwards to twenty-five or so people
attending Mass, but when the Marine Base at Sonora Junction
was given a Catholic Chaplain, he started a Sunday Mass at
9 AM at the Marine Base Housing in Coleville. That was certainly
a better time for a Sunday Mass than 2 PM. Three years later,
he was replaced by another Catholic Chaplain and shortly thereafter,
the afternoon Mass was cancelled.
